Allow naming nodes and showing their names in the Properties panel

Currently if you create a lot of float values, there is no way to distinguish between them in this interface.

Keavon showed that it's possible to apply a name on a node graph, by transforming variable to layer and renaming that layer, but this name doesn't used in the user interface as shown on the picture.

Paper Cut label means that this is easy to solve? I'm naming all the nodes I want to provide to the user and pinning them. I want to tell them with nothing selected you can easily adjust parameters on the right side, but then it's a hot mess. I can tell them to use the nodes, but there are so many, it's easy to get lost in the forest... Can this be used as a challenge for a GSoC student?
