The MGE multi-start lane investigation (active.md :: mge-lane-death,
autolens_profiling#128) is done in substance: the cause was found on 2026-08-15
and every follow-up it owed has since shipped. The remaining confirmation legs
(GPU / float64 / multi-seed re-measurement of the 62%) are superseded and not
carried forward as scoped.

Unlike the two shelvings that preceded it (#204, #205), this one earns a dated
completion record
rather than complete/archive/shelved/ — the work produced a
cause, a refuted hypothesis, a counter-finding and six merged PRs, and five
existing records already cite the investigation.

Changes

  • lifecycle.py record mge-lane-death --date 2026-08-18 — writes
    complete/2026/08/mge-lane-death.md, folds in active/mge_lane_death.md, and
    drops the active.md section
  • repoint the inference-programme-ledger disjointness note at the record; its
    research/mge-lane-death branch was never created
  • regenerate complete/index.md and dashboard.md (in flight 8 → 7)

What the record preserves

  • Cause — the deaths are in the PRIOR term, not the likelihood. Lanes walk
out of UniformPrior support and resurrect=False never redraws them; that
accumulation is the 62%. The likelihood never went non-finite in ~7200
    lane-steps across three arms.
  • Refuted hypothesis — widening the shear box made it marginally worse.
  • Counter-finding — the ell_comps plateau was masked, not cleared; the
constrained count is 667 (27.79%) once the prior deaths are removed, from a
diagnostic arm and so not a citable production number.
  • Trap — 62% is a survival integral, not a hazard rate. Grade any re-run on
    the alive-versus-step curve.
  • Shipped downstream — PyAutoFit#1477/#1478/#1479/#1480/#1482 and
autolens_profiling#132, plus the upstream counter (PyAutoFit#1475,
    PyAutoGalaxy#572).
  • Not carried forward — the GPU/float64/multi-seed confirmation, the
unmasked ell_comps trapping draft, and the undrafted clipper phase 3.

Checks

  • lifecycle.py check: OK
  • lifecycle.py index --check: OK

Follow-up owed

Tracking issue autolens_profiling#128 is still open and wants closing by hand —
that repo is out of this session's scope.
