Suggested troubleshooting steps for bug reports

• Upgraded to the latest mycli if possible.
• Ran mycli --checkup, if supported.

Hi! Thanks! It looks like it would be good to add the sqlglot version to the mycli --checkup output, since this is not the first time we seemed to trip up on a sqlglot version.

We will see about reproducing.

The directory /private/tmp/sqlglotc_build_6vbysb6i in the trace is strange. Maybe the sqlglot library builds the accelerated sqlglotc on the fly when sqlglotc was not installed?

Does this command output anything interesting?

Hi @rolandwalker — did some digging on my machine. Quick summary of what I found:

sqlglot version

30.7.0 (same as yours):

The /private/tmp/sqlglotc_build_* path is a red herring

It's not a runtime build dir. The sqlglot wheel ships mypyc-compiled .so files, and sqlglotc_build_6vbysb6i was the wheel's build-time working directory baked into the compiled extension for traceback purposes. The directory doesn't need to exist at runtime.

Root cause

The mypyc-compiled .so files in the wheel are inconsistent with each other.

The traceback originates in compiled code:

Line 125 of the installed parsers/mysql.py source is:

"FROM_UNIXTIME": build_formatted_time(exp.UnixToTime, "mysql"),

That call site is correct for the current signature in dialects/dialect.py:

def build_formatted_time(exp_class, dialect, default=None): ...

But importing the compiled module (sqlglot.parsers.mysql) fails with the missing-arg error, while loading the same .py file directly via importlib.util.spec_from_file_location succeeds:

So the compiled parsers/mysql.cpython-314-darwin.so (and likely its __mypyc sibling) was built against an older snapshot of build_formatted_time (the one without the required dialect arg), while the compiled dialects/dialect.so shipped in the same wheel has the new signature. The two .so files are out of sync inside the same wheel.

Where this came from

I installed mycli via Homebrew (brew install mycli, formula version 1.72.1_1). The bottle pulls sqlglot from PyPI. Likely candidates:

• A bad sqlglot 30.7.0 wheel on PyPI built from inconsistent sources, or
• A pip-resolution / cache issue at Homebrew bottle build time mixing files from two sqlglot versions.

I haven't reproduced this on a clean pipx install yet, so it may be Homebrew-bottle-specific.

Workaround

Force a pure-Python sqlglot install:

Suggestions for mycli

1. Add sqlglot to the --checkup output (as you mentioned).
2. Consider catching TypeError/ImportError from sqlglot.tokenize in classify_sandbox_statement (packages/sql_utils.py:489) and falling back to a non-sqlglot path so a broken sqlglot install degrades gracefully instead of crashing the prompt loop.
3. Worth pinging tobymao/sqlglot about the mypyc-build inconsistency in the 30.7.0 wheel.

Happy to test patches or run more diagnostics.

@conf thanks for the very helpful analysis! @danhopkins you mean you are getting the build_formatted_string() exception as well? Using a mycli install from Homebrew or from pip?

I haven't yet duplicated this issue, but am going to try bumping sqlglot/sqlglotc to v30.8.0 and doing a release, even though @terjeros recently said the tighter pinning is causing friction for packagers downstream.

Apologies for the partial report! Yes, I get the same error in build_formatted_time(), from a homebrewed install. It triggers after running a query (MySQL in my case, but I doubt it matters), the query succeeds immediately after the error is reported

Thanks! https://github.com/dbcli/mycli/releases/tag/v1.73.1 is out with a new version of sqlglot. Homebrew usually picks up a new version very quickly.

We could test the "bad bottle" theory by installing mycli via Hombrew with the --build-from-source option to sidestep bottles.
