Summary

An SEO pass on getopenscreen.com, driven by a claude-seo audit of the live site (health score 72/100). Four commits, each building on its own:

  1. New English pages. /alternatives/screen-studio/, /alternatives/camtasia/, /alternatives/loom/, /compare/openscreen-vs-cap/, /compare/openscreen-vs-obs/, the three /screen-recorder-<os>/ pages, /features/auto-zoom/, /features/captions/, /docs/faq/, /docs/guides/product-demo-video/. The CLI reference moves to /docs/cli/.
  2. Docs and blog aligned with v1.11.0. The live site contradicted the code in several places: region capture that does not exist, "native webcam" on macOS, "browser pipeline" on Linux, EN/FR/ES-only transcript forcing, the obsolete Gatekeeper step, and "ARM64 builds" that were never published.
  3. Localization into fr, es, pt-BR, ja, zh-CN, zh-TW and de, plus the landing and download fixes. The macOS buttons on /download/ did not match the current .dmg names. Windows now offers the Microsoft Store and winget first.
  4. Docusaurus Faster. The build output is equivalent to webpack's. The no-cache build dropped from about 3 min to 29-52 s locally.

How the content was kept true

  • Fact sheets first. One sheet describes OpenScreen, checked against the code, with per-platform differences and a list of what it does not do. Six competitor sheets (Screen Studio, Cap, OBS, Camtasia, Loom, ShareX) come from each vendor's own pages.
  • Adversarial review. A second agent fact-checked every page and every fix, re-opening the code or the source URL.
  • Honest comparisons. Every comparison page has a "when X is the better choice" section, dated prices ("as of September 2026") with sources, and a no-affiliation note.
  • Excluded claims. No page claims region capture, SRT export, ARM64 packages, hosted sharing or a speed ranking.
  • Rejected pages. A ShareX page, a "100% offline" page and a benchmark landing page were dropped for poor fit or claims that would not hold.

i18n design

  • Scope. The landing page, /download/, the footer, theme strings and all 12 docs are translated.
  • Process. One translator and one reviewer per locale, both working from the English.
  • Interface labels. The docs use the app's own UI labels in each language. German keeps the English labels until a release ships the German interface; feat: add German (de) locale #672 is merged but not released yet.
  • English-only pages. The blog and the new marketing pages stay English-only.
    • Other locale builds exclude them (src/lib/locale-routes.ts).
    • Links to them from translated pages are unprefixed.
    • SiteMetadata emits no hreflang on them or on 404 pages. It is ejected from 3.10.1, so recheck it on upgrade.
    • The locale dropdown sends those routes to each locale's home.
  • Anchors. Translated headings keep the English anchors ({#english-slug}). The build refuses a locale whose docs are only partly translated.
  • URLs. /pt-br/, /zh-cn/ and /zh-tw/ are lowercase because GitHub Pages is case-sensitive.
  • Interface-languages line. Shown on / and /download/, it reads the locale list at the latest stable tag, so it shows 13 languages until 1.12 ships.
  • Contributor guide. website/i18n/TRANSLATING.md explains how to update a locale.

Things to know

  • Fragile plugin. The rspack-minimizers plugin edits Rspack's private _args to keep the *.js.LICENSE.txt files and non-range media queries. A new docs.yml step, "Check minifier output", fails if an Rspack update turns it into a no-op.
  • Build log fix. check:recreation was already failing on main: cursorShow had moved to projectDefaults.ts. It passes again.
  • CI setup. The docs job now fetches full history, so lastmod is real. It also passes GITHUB_TOKEN to the API lookups, which are now made once per build instead of once per locale.
  • Maintenance cost. Competitor prices need re-checking over time, and English doc changes need carrying to 7 locales.

Screenshots / video

Checked in a local docusaurus serve of the full build:

  • desktop: en home, fr home, /alternatives/screen-studio/;
  • mobile (375 px): ja home, /compare/openscreen-vs-cap/, /de/docs/installation/.

The ja hero no longer breaks mid-word (word-break: auto-phrase).

Testing

  • Per commit, in a clean worktree: npm ci, npm run typecheck, npm run build and npm run check:recreation. On the last commit, the minifier-output check too.
    • Every commit typechecks and builds.
    • check:recreation fails on commits 1-2, as it does on main today, and passes from commit 3.
    • Typecheck plus build, from a fresh npm ci: 166 s on commit 3 (webpack, 8 locales), 74 s on commit 4 (Faster).
  • Full 8-locale build: passes. Per-locale output checked:
    • <html lang>, translated titles and descriptions, one h1 and a self canonical;
    • hreflang on translated routes and none on English-only routes or 404 pages;
    • per-locale sitemaps, and robots.txt listing 8 of them;
    • no blog or marketing pages under a locale path;
    • locale dropdown targets exist (4,720 same-site links checked).
  • Faster vs webpack: compared on 132 HTML pages. Visible text, title, meta tags, canonical, hreflang and JSON-LD are identical; CSS features are preserved.
  • Biome: passes on every changed TS/TSX/JSON file.
  • Not verified:
    • npm ci with the Faster native bindings on Linux (the lockfile has the linux-x64-gnu packages);
    • the CI build time;
    • the macOS 13/14 microphone caveat on the Screen Studio and Mac pages, which comes from reading the code, not from a test;
    • the exact Spanish wording of the Windows 11 SmartScreen dialog.

…the CLI reference

New English pages, each written from a fact sheet checked against the
v1.11.0 code and, for other products, against the vendor's own pages
(prices and plan limits dated September 2026, sources listed per page):

- /alternatives/screen-studio/, /alternatives/camtasia/, /alternatives/loom/
- /compare/openscreen-vs-cap/, /compare/openscreen-vs-obs/
- /screen-recorder-windows/, /screen-recorder-mac/, /screen-recorder-linux/
- /features/auto-zoom/, /features/captions/
- /docs/faq/ and /docs/guides/product-demo-video/

Every commercial page says when the other tool is the better choice and
carries a trademark / no-affiliation note. No page claims region capture,
SRT export, ARM64 packages, hosted sharing or a speed ranking.

The CLI reference moves from docs/cli.md to website/docs/cli.md, so it is
published at /docs/cli/; the root file now points there, and the README
and the code comments that cited it follow.

static/llms.txt lists the key pages for AI crawlers.
The site contradicted the code in several places; each change below was
checked against the v1.11.0 sources.

- recording: no region capture exists; the cursor toggle is on Linux too;
  the macOS webcam goes through the browser, native webcam is Windows only;
  Linux captures natively through PipeWire and the ScreenCast portal.
- installation: Microsoft Store and winget first on Windows, with the
  SmartScreen step for the unsigned .exe; no Gatekeeper step since the
  notarized 1.9.0; native Windows capture needs build 19041; the browser
  fallback only applies when the capture helper is missing.
- captions / media-library: 100 forceable transcript languages, not three;
  the Media tab imports video only.
- export: GPU H.264 through VAAPI on Linux since 1.11, H.265 in software.
- editing-timeline: cursor data on Linux too; inspector facets as shipped.
- intro: a descriptive title and an "Official links" block, since
  openscreen.io and openscreen.net are not this project.
- docs link the matching feature pages.

Blog: the v1.8.0 post no longer says edits stay entirely on the machine
(the chat goes to the provider you connect); the store post no longer
announces ARM64 builds that were never published; over-long titles get a
title_meta; each post links /download/ and the relevant docs page. The
blog list page gets an h1 (swizzled BlogListPage, 3.10.1), and a removed
tag URL redirects to its replacement.
… and de

Landing page, /download/, footer, theme strings and all twelve docs are
translated, each locale by one translator and one reviewer working from
the English. App UI labels are the app's own translations for that
locale; German keeps the English labels until a release ships the German
interface (see i18n/TRANSLATING.md). Headings carry explicit
{#english-slug} ids so #links survive translation, and the build refuses
a locale whose docs are only partly translated.

The blog and the new comparison/platform/feature pages stay English-only:
they are excluded from the other builds (src/lib/locale-routes.ts), links
to them from translated pages are plain unprefixed anchors (LocaleLink,
MDXComponents/A, the navbar Blog item), SiteMetadata (ejected from
3.10.1) emits no hreflang on them or on 404s, and the locale dropdown
sends those routes to each locale's home.

pt-BR, zh-CN and zh-TW are served lowercase (/pt-br/, /zh-cn/, /zh-tw/)
because GitHub Pages is case-sensitive. robots.txt lists every locale's
sitemap. The interface-languages line on / and /download/ is read from
the app's locale list at the latest stable tag.

Also on the landing and download pages:
- platform claims match the code (webcam, Linux PipeWire capture), the
  obsolete xattr step is gone, and Windows offers the Microsoft Store and
  winget first, with the SmartScreen note for the .exe;
- the .dmg patterns match the current asset names, and the build fails
  when a release asset cannot be placed;
- a spaced H1, a short "OpenScreen is..." definition, a keyword-bearing
  H2, the NEW badge linking the benchmark post, Showcase links to docs;
- the fictional "Fern" page in the walkthrough is data-nosnippet.

Site config: sitemap drops blog tag/author/archive pages, the CI checkout
fetches full history so lastmod is real, GitHub API lookups are cached
across locale builds and use the workflow token, the Discord URL has its
trailing slash, Docusaurus is pinned to ~3.10.1 with the packages the
ejected components import. gen-recreation reads cursorShow from
projectDefaults.ts, where it moved, so check:recreation passes again.
Eight locales are eight full builds, and bundling is most of each. With
Rspack, SWC and Lightning CSS the no-cache build (the CI case) went from
2m54s-3m02s to 29s-52s locally on Windows; with a warm cache both take
about 23s. CI timings are still to be observed.

The output matches the webpack build: same files, and on every HTML page
the same visible text, title, meta tags, canonical, hreflang and JSON-LD.
Getting there took:

- swcHtmlMinimizer off: its parser turned the NUL bytes React leaves in
  attributes into U+FFFD before fix-build-output could drop them;
- gitEagerVcs off: it lost <lastmod> for / and /download/;
- an rspack-minimizers plugin that restores the *.js.LICENSE.txt files
  SWC dropped and keeps min-width media queries out of range syntax
  (UC Browser 15.5 is in browserslist). It edits the minimizers' private
  `_args`, so docs.yml gains a "Check minifier output" step that fails if
  an Rspack update turns it into a silent no-op.

ssgWorkerThreads stays off: Docusaurus only uses threads above 100 pages
per locale, and it would need a future.v4 flag. @docusaurus/faster is
pinned like the other Docusaurus packages, and the lockfile carries the
Linux x64 native bindings CI needs.

Add website tests for the homepage locale branches.

Home passes appLanguages to softwareApplicationLd, which adds the language list to the JSON-LD. It also passes the English-only blog URL to LocaleLink, whose default and non-default locale branches produce different links. The website package has no test coverage for these behaviors. Add same-package rendering tests that assert the JSON-LD language list and the English blog URL, including hrefLang="en" for a non-default locale.

Click capture on Wayland reads evdev, which needs the user in the `input`
group. The docs said OpenScreen reads only the left button, which is true,
but not that the group lets every program the user runs read every input
device, keyboard included. The installation guide (all eight languages)
now carries that caution next to the usermod step, and the Linux page
says it where it recommends the group.

The step itself stays: it is the only way to record clicks on Wayland,
and recording works without it.

The website had no tests. These two pure functions carry the logic that
fails quietly: isEnglishOnlyPath decides whether a translated page links
to /fr/blog/ (a 404) or /blog/, and the .dmg patterns once matched no
asset for a whole release, sending both macOS buttons to the releases list.

node:test with Node's type stripping, so no test framework is added; the
files import their subject with its .ts extension, which
allowImportingTsExtensions permits under noEmit. `npm test` runs in the
docs workflow after the type check.
